In order to further improve domain name security, ICANN has recently implemented new rules and procedures governing domain name ownership. These rules in particular are in regards to changes made to domain name contact information, most notably the email address.

This new procedure, which takes effect on December 1, 2016, will involve sending a confirmation link to both the current and future email addresses (as is currently done for domain name transfers and ownership changes). The change can only be completed once both links have been accepted. Then, once it has been completed, a confirmation email is sent to both email addresses as notification of the change.

This new process also includes a transfer lock on domain names associated with any "owner" contacts (or "administrative" contacts in certain cases) after undergoing an email change. This lock will prevent the domain name from being transferred for a period of 60 days following the email update.

ICANN now provides the option for a "Designated Agent" to waive this 60-day lock, and as we are aware that this new obligation makes the transfer process more complicated, especially should you ever lose access to the email address currently on your account, we have chosen to allow you to authorize Gandi to act as your Designated Agent and remove the 60-day transfer lock, which we will do by default when selecting this option.

To make Gandi your Designated Agent, you would just need to confirm Gandi's new contract during your next email address change or domain name operation. The new contract adds this notion of a Designated Agent, thereby allowing us to remove the transfer lock whenever you choose to update your email address.

This new process will require some additional development on our part, though, so we will not be able to implement this feature immediately on December 1. Unfortunately, this means in the meantime, you will be temporarily unable to modify your email address via our website except through our manual validation process. For that, you  just need to request the email change following the manual email change process with our customer care team.

We expect the process to be fully automated sometime in mid-December 2016, at which point it will become available directly from our website. Check back for future upates as we will be posting them here when they come in.

[UPDATE  - January 2017]

We have completed the development of a way to make this process automatic. It is therefore now possible for you to update the email address linked to your handle from the Account Management section of our website once you are logged into it. You can find some more information on this in our related wiki page, notably concerning the acceptance of the new contract that covers the "Designated Agent" notion.

It is also possible to update a handle's email address via our public API. However, you must first validate our new contract which includes the notion of "Designated Agent". To do this, you need to initiate a new domain name operation (renewal, registration, transfer) via our website, and validate the new contract during the operation. Once this step has been achieved, you will be able proceed with email changes on handles as desired, using the contact.update method.

If you are the owner of a domain name, there's a good chance you've already been exposed to this slamming campaign: an email exhorting you to quickly renew your domain or update your banking information while threatening the loss of your domain due to an imminent expiration.

Here is an example of one of these deceptive emails, which can be safely disregarded:

How to tell if an email is really from Gandi

Sender email address

Before clicking any links or even opening the email, check the address of the sender. This is no guarantee that the email is legitimate, because it's easy to spoof emails to

look like they come from another address.

For most TLDs, we warn you 60, 30, 15 and 1 day before the expiration date from the email address support-renew[@]gandi.net.

Recipient email address

If you have our anti-spam protection activated on your account, another thing to check is the receiver email address.  We only send email directly to the address you have on file with us, so if you see the receive email address is the "obfuscated" forwarding address visible in the whois (e.g. G23475397CF426333A39B8A1BF5BD226A-1234567@CONTACT.GANDI.NET, as in the example above), you can know that the email didn't come from Gandi.

Check messages and domains in your account

You can find copies of all the reminders we send you in the Messages folder in your account, and you can verify the expiration date of your domain from your list of domains.

By the way, if you are concerned about missing an expiration date, you should know that you can always activate automatic renewal.

Activate or refresh anti-spam

Remember that you can replace your real email address in the whois with an obfuscated forwarding address (see how). Every time you submit your contact information (whether you make any actual changes or not), the "scrambled" forwarding address is regenerated and the old one stops working. If you're getting multiple emails to the obfuscated whois address, just resubmit your handle's contact info.

If you have any questions, you can always contact our Customer Care team or ask @gandibar on Twitter.

We will be performing major network upgrades to our backbone network in Paris during the night of 23-24 March 2013.

The purpose of this work is to replace our current (aging) backbone network routers with newer generation equipment allowing for increased capacity, performance and resilience.  During this time, all Gandi services in Paris will experience brief periods of network unavailability and/or instability as the migration proceeds.

This activity will not impact the individual Gandi services themselves, but rather only the network connectivity between the internet and those services.  As a result, there will be no need for hosting customers to restart their IaaS or PaaS servers/instances.  Services in our Baltimore datacentre will not be directly affected by this maintenance, but some periods of routing instability and reconvergence may be experienced, though these will be far less prevalent than for the Paris services.

This migration will commence at 01:30 CET (00:30 GMT) on Sunday 24 March 2013, and we estimate between 10 and 15 minutes of major network outage during the initial migration, followed by a number of brief periods of network instability during the remainder of the migration.  The entire migration activity should last approximately 90 minutes, but no more than two hours.

Operations will be ended at 05:00 AM CET (04:00 AM GMT).

We apologise in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.

EDIT 03:08 AM CET : maintenance ended

Some tranfers of domains into Gandi may see 500 Errors after setting DNS options.

If this happens to you, just put the transfer through on http://v3.gandi.net instead of www.gandi.net.

We will repair the issue as soon as possible,  and update this notice when we do.

Hello,

Over the past 24 hours (since June 12th at 11:00 CET), our web forwarding service has been the target of an extremely large DDoS attack. Our technical teams have been working on thep problem since it began, though it appears somewhat likely that the attack will succeed, meaning, the total saturation of our service and a subsequent temporary interrumption in service.

The services impactes will be all the web forwarding addresses that are configured on our DNS.

No other service is currently at risk (DNS, Email, Hosting, SSL, are OK).

We ask that you refrain from contacting our support with questions concerning this, as they can only forward you to this message, which will be updated in real time. The saturation of our customer support will only degrade the situation, while not being able to give you any more information concerning the status of the situation than is on this page.

We apologize for the inconvienence, and assure you that we are doing everything possible to recover from this attack and return to our normal quality of operation.

update: we have put in place a solution that has allowed us to reduce the risk of service interruption. We are therefore lowering the alert level, but will continue to monitor the DDoS which is still underway.
